In her own words
The real story behind Safari Oil, and behind Solar Bloom: Zambia, Costa Rica, California, and one travel ritual that became a beauty house.
Safari Oil began with a month in Zambia and the beauty ritual I set out to create.
Years ago, my cousin died. We were close growing up, and losing her felt like the floor dropping out from under me. I was fortunate enough to take a month and go to Zambia, to visit my aunt, to celebrate my cousin’s life, and to feel something other than the grief.
While I was there, we went on safari across the plains and along the river.
Weight limits, dust, heat, humidity, and long drives made every packed object matter. I wanted a close-wearing fragrance and a light, resilient ritual for small planes and early departures.
I saw the shape my ritual needed in that environment: fewer steps, elegant texture, and one portable formula that still felt like care after long days outdoors.
That was the first spark.
The real shift came during a season of upheaval, when I was rebuilding my life.
I booked a five-week solo trip to Costa Rica to spend time in nature and meet other travelers.
In Costa Rica, I developed and field-tested the idea through heat, humidity, long days outdoors, and one small bag. I wanted a ritual simple enough to travel and beautiful enough to feel grounding wherever I landed.
I had been making formulas for years. I knew what I needed to do.
I decided to build something just for myself: a light, anhydrous serum-oil with next-generation plant actives, enough slip to move across skin and hair, and a format compact enough for a plane’s weight limit. At the time, I wanted one beautiful object that could simplify my travel ritual across face, body, scalp, and hair.
Using my university research access, I worked through the cosmetic chemistry, ingredient compatibility, and published research behind the actives I was choosing.
The first version of Safari Oil carried THDA, bakuchiol, peptides, bisabolol, and a botanical blend chosen with real scientific intention.
The texture was the revelation. It spread easily, settled quickly, and left my skin feeling soft and quietly luminous. It felt weightless under makeup and pleasurable enough to use every day.
I expected women to respond first. Men with considered skincare rituals responded just as warmly at beach resorts and events.
What people said, unprompted
And that’s when I understood what people were responding to: a compact ritual with an elegant texture, a close-wearing aroma, and a feeling of care that belonged equally at home and on the road.
When I came home to California, I kept refining. Each version taught me more about texture, aromatic balance, ingredient compatibility, and how much pleasure one carefully made step could hold.
The botanical direction stayed intimate and grounded: soft florals, quiet woods, and bright green notes composed to sit close to the skin rather than announce themselves before I did.
I wanted a ritual that made space for care, relief, and celebration as life found its shape again.
Five years of formulating went into what came next. Friends, family, and the first people to wear Solar Bloom helped me refine the balance between performance, botanical simplicity, and the sensorial finish I wanted to live with every day.
Safari Oil brings fragrance, softness, and quiet luminosity into one oil-based body ritual.
It grew from grief, travel, heat, dust, renewal, and rediscovery.
Safari Oil is the ritual that accompanied my return to myself.
Thank you for being here. Your support means the world, and I hope this brings you efficient simplicity and peace, too. This is care, bottled.
Safari Oil began as one ritual for one trip. Friends, family, and people I met on the road asked for it, then for formulas for the scalp, hair, morning, and evening. The line grew one real request at a time.
Grow started the same way, with a different curiosity to follow.
I’m sensitive to fragrance, and I wanted a scalp ritual with generous massage slip, a considered aroma, and a clear place before shampoo.
I read published cosmetic and botanical literature. A friend with beautiful hair shared the Ayurvedic-style oil she made for herself, and I built from that exchange, bringing together traditions and ingredients I wanted to understand more deeply.
The focused pre-wash massage made my scalp feel cared for, and my hair felt conditioned and looked shinier. It’s the one ritual I return to, every single wash day.
Invisible Gloss became the finishing oil I’d been trying to find my whole life.
I wanted the finishing oil I had been searching for: weightless, polished movement in an anhydrous finish. That search eventually brought me to the lab bench.
So I built Invisible Gloss around the exact finish I wanted: light enough for daily use, with slip, shine, and natural movement.
It became the ritual I reach for every day.
Glow and Rich began with a routine that had become a logistics problem.
I used to travel with a fourteen-step Korean skincare ritual and five separate active products beyond cleansing, essence, and eye cream. It cost me about $2,000 a year at Sephora, took real effort to pack, and asked me to remember which acid, vitamin C, peptide, antioxidant, or retinoid belonged on which night.
I had worked in cosmetics, tried products at every price, and spent years studying skincare and cosmetic chemistry. My brief was precise: meaningful active levels, sensitivity-conscious botanical formulation, elegant textures, easy travel, and an object that felt like an instrument.
So I made the active wardrobe I wanted: Glow by day, Rich after dark. Between them, THDA vitamin C, bakuchiol, peptide care, CoQ10, bisabolol, antioxidants, and plant lipids live in two concentrated, waterless formulas that are easy to tell apart and easy to remember.
My cleansers, pH-balancing essence, eye cream, prescription tretinoin, and sunscreen still have their places. Glow and Rich give the active steps a two-bottle rhythm that is simpler, more beautiful, and far easier to carry. The money I once spent searching for the next serum now goes back into Solar Bloom development.
Friends, family, and the first people to wear Solar Bloom helped me refine the textures, finish, and the way each ritual belongs in a real day or night.
With much love and gratitude,
Solar Bloom
